Additional Information
From Rockingham's founding in 1872 until the opening of the Fremantle harbour in 1897 this town operated as one of Western Australia's timber ports. Today it is a seaside resort city, conveniently located 47km south of Perth, Western Australia, capitalising on its pristine beaches and protected waterways.
Situated 40km from Perth GPO, Rockingham is named after the ship "Rockingham" which ran aground on the beach which fronts the suburb in 1830. The ship was the last of three ships to bring Thomas Peel's settlers to the new colony, and although initially salvaged, was eventually sunk in Cockburn Sound.
The site of Rockingham was identified by J S Roe, Surveyor General, in 1846, and a town site was surveyed here by Alfred Hillman in 1847.
